Step 2: building knowledge

Preparatory exercises

Assignment 1: writing an entry for Wikipedia

Most challenging task is finding a subject that has not been written up yet. In the assignments (See: transformation) various suggestions have been given. Students will first have to practise writing objectively in English in a sufficiently formal style. They will have to familiarize themselves with the demands made by Wikipedia on the quality and reliability of the entries submitted. Various ways of finding verifiable information (primary and secondary research) will have to be practised.

This step in the cycle is meant to build up confidence - depending on the level of your students, you may vary the amount of pre-training offered at this stage.

Assignment 2: Year Book of....a sociological class survey.

Not many students will have done surveys or conducted interviews in English to obtain reliable data. Especially the productive skills will require preparatory exercises: how to determine which questions should be used in a survey, how to construct a questionnaire in English and how to write up the results in an objective way. At this stage you may want to invest time into teaching how  results can be described (or presented) scientifically. Your students may need to practise with using more academic English.
